How to choose a standing desk

Almost nobody regrets buying a standing desk. Plenty of people regret which one they bought, and the complaint is nearly always the same: at standing height it wobbles. That is predictable from the frame specification before you order.

Wobble: where it comes from

A sit-stand desk is a column with a heavy plate on top. Raise it and you lengthen the lever, so any slack in the mechanism gets amplified. Four things drive how much you feel:

Number of stages in the legs

Legs telescope in two or three segments.

  • Two-stage: fewer joints, but each segment is longer, so the desk needs a taller collapsed height and the top of the range is often limited. Cheaper.
  • Three-stage: more joints — which sounds worse — but shorter segments and greater overlap between them at any given height, plus a faster lift. In practice three-stage frames from the same tier are usually more stable at full extension, and reach both lower and higher.

If you are tall, or you want the desk to go low enough for a short person to sit properly, three-stage is close to mandatory.

Number of motors

Single-motor frames drive both legs through a crossbar. Dual-motor frames drive each leg independently. Dual is quieter, faster, handles heavier loads, and stays level more reliably over years of use. Single-motor is not automatically bad on a small desk, but it is the first thing to go when a manufacturer is hitting a price point.

Foot design

Look at the depth of the feet relative to the desktop depth. Short feet under a deep top means the whole assembly pivots forward when you lean on the front edge. Wider, deeper feet cost more to ship and are one of the first things cut.

Crossbar

A crossbar between the legs adds significant lateral rigidity. Crossbar-free designs look cleaner and give you more legroom, but they place more demand on the leg columns to be stiff on their own — which is fine on a good frame and noticeable on a cheap one.

The practical read: three-stage, dual-motor, deep feet is the combination that stops people complaining about wobble. If you are cutting one of the three to fit a budget, cut the crossbar preference first — not the stage count.

Lift capacity: read it carefully

Most frames quote a capacity somewhere between 120 and 160 lb (roughly 55–75 kg). Two caveats matter more than the number:

  • It usually excludes the desktop. A solid wood top can weigh 60–80 lb on its own, which eats half your budget before you put anything on it.
  • It is a lifting rating, not a static one. The frame will hold more standing still than it will raise. If you are near the limit, the symptom is slow or stuttering travel, then eventually a motor giving up.

Add up: desktop + monitors + arm + machine + everything else. If you run a heavy multi-monitor arm setup, size up a tier.

Height range: check against your body, not the average

Manufacturers quote a range like 25–50 in (63–127 cm). Whether that works depends on you and on the desktop thickness, which adds to the bottom of the range.

A reasonable starting point for standing desk height is roughly elbow height when your upper arms hang relaxed at your sides and your forearms are parallel to the floor. Measure that. Then check it falls comfortably inside the frame's range with the desktop thickness added — not at the very top of it, because you want a little room to adjust.

Two common failure cases: tall users finding the maximum height is still slightly too low, and shorter users finding the minimum is too high to sit properly, which is arguably worse since you sit more than you stand.

Things that matter less than the marketing suggests

Number of memory presets

Four presets versus three is not a real difference. Most people use two. What does matter is whether the controller has a genuine anti-collision function, and whether presets survive a power cut.

Lift speed

Quoted in inches per second. Anything around 1.5 in/s and up feels fine. The difference between models is a couple of seconds per transition — not something you will notice after week one.

Bamboo versus laminate tops

Largely aesthetic and weight-related. Laminate over particleboard is lighter and cheaper; bamboo and solid wood look better, weigh more, and eat into lift capacity. Neither is a durability problem at normal use.

What actually goes wrong over time

  • Legs drift out of sync. Usually fixable with the reset procedure in the manual. If it recurs monthly, the frame is failing.
  • Controller failure. More common than motor failure. Check the controller is a replaceable part and is sold separately.
  • Cable strain. If you have not managed the cables, raising the desk pulls things off it. Budget for a cable tray at the same time as the desk, not later.

Before you buy: a checklist

  • Measure your elbow height standing, relaxed — that is your target desk height.
  • Confirm that height, plus desktop thickness, sits inside the frame range with room to spare.
  • Confirm the minimum height works for sitting, especially if others will use the desk.
  • Prefer three-stage legs if you are tall, short, or want the widest range.
  • Prefer dual-motor unless the desk is small and lightly loaded.
  • Add up desktop plus everything going on it, and compare against lift capacity.
  • Check foot depth against desktop depth.
  • Confirm the controller is available as a spare part.
  • Measure the floor space with the desk at its deepest, including feet.
